Signs of suicide and depression

Some things that put teenagers at a high risk of depression and suicide include:
  • Stress
  • Loss of a parent or loved one
  • Break-up of a romantic relationship
  • Attention, conduct, or learning disorders
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Abuse or neglect


Signs that a person is depressed or thinking of suicide include:

  • Sad or irritable mood
  • Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable
  • Large changes in appetite or weight
  • Difficulty sleeping, or oversleeping
  • Slow or agitated movement
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Frequent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Talking about “going away”
  • Referring to things they “won’t be needing,” and giving away possessions
  • Pulling away from friends or family
  • Engaging in self-destructive behavior (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example)
