Some things that put teenagers at a high risk of depression and suicide include:
Stress
Loss of a parent or loved one
Break-up of a romantic relationship
Attention, conduct, or learning disorders
Chronic illnesses
Abuse or neglect
Signs that a person is depressed or thinking of suicide include:
Sad or irritable mood
Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable
Large changes in appetite or weight
Difficulty sleeping, or oversleeping
Slow or agitated movement
Loss of energy
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
Difficulty concentrating
Frequent thoughts of death or suicide
Talking about “going away”
Referring to things they “won’t be needing,” and giving away possessions
Pulling away from friends or family
Engaging in self-destructive behavior (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example)
